Jano Navarrete
I am very happy to write this to introduce this book that compiles some of the sketches I have drawn during my career as a tattoo artist. My name is Jano Navarrete. I’ve been a full-time tattoo artist for over 14 years. Throughout this time, there are many things a person can learn and discover about this profession or art form, however you prefer to call it.
For me, the most important aspect is the process. When Leo Barada invited me to participate in his new book project, I didn’t hesitate to accept, as creating a sketchbook is precisely about showcasing the process, the part of tattooing that I love the most.
I am currently 34 years old, and I acquired my first tattoo machine in Santiago, Chile in 2008. I’ve been fortunate to travel and tattoo in different countries and cities, and I believe that has been the most significant part of my learning and growth as a tattoo artist. I am currently living and working in Barcelona, Spain.
Over the years of tattooing, I have met many people who have helped and influenced me on this journey.
I got to know Leo Barada through his work several years ago on social media. Shortly afterward, we met in person and got to know each other. We talked about many things, and it was clear that we shared a very similar passion for tattooing.
My preferred style in tattooing is classic Japanese, but not exclusively so. I strive to be as respectful as possible when reinterpreting traditional references from centuries-old prints, paintings, and the work of master tattoo artists in horimono. I know that my roots are not Oriental, so my appreciation is more aesthetic than religious, but I always study and respect the traditions.
Ryan Ussher

Having started his tattooing career in 2005, Ryan has worked in various locations in Australia and abroad, refining his style inspired by traditional Japanese tattooing, ukiyo-e imagery, and western elements. His large-scale designs complement the body’s contours, creating a seamless flow with the human anatomy.
Through his tattoos, Ryan invites viewers to delve into the scenes he creates within each piece.
Drawing from traditional Japanese tattooing, the ukiyo-e period, and western art, Ryan blends diverse artistic traditions in his work.
His tattoos, known for heavy contrast, movement, and clarity, are designed to capture attention and make a lasting impression.
Ryan’s artwork is known to captivate viewers, whether seen from a distance or up close.
Alex Rusty
We are very excited to announce that we are slowly working on a book by Ryan Ussher and Alex Rusty!
For me, they are the best and most powerful tattoo artistry coming from Australia in the Japanese tattoo art.
Although I have known them for a long time, I was lucky enough to share a few drinks last April at Godofinks, and it was inevitable and natural to connect with these two monsters.
It will be done without rushing and next year, but I can already tell you that it will be an epic book.
Thanks brothers from the other side of the world.
